Integrated sustainable technologies
The heart of the SEC is a stable thermal mass; an underfloor heating and cooling system integrated into mass concrete floors fed by heat pumps which extract 'free' heating and cooling energy from the ground and outside air.
Sustainable technologies showcased at the SEC include
1 Underfloor heating and cooling
piped water in thermal mass concrete floors
piped water in floating floor systems
  electric cable and mat systems
2 Chilled ceilings
3 Heated or chilled ventilation
4 Heat pumps (feeding points 1, 2 and 3 above)
  ground source
  air-to-water
5 Solar hot water
6 Gas fired condensing boiler (for ‘top up’)
7 Lighting
  natural daylight through reflective glazing
solar screening by controlled tree planting
  daylight tubes
low energy light fittings with movement sensors
8 Insulation
  in the building envelope
  in the underfloor heating
9 Wall and floor linings
  thermally transparent floor board
  zero carbon wall board
10 Rainwater harvesting (eg for vehicle washing)
11 Sustainable electricity generation
  wind turbine (awaiting planning permission)
12 Carbon offset
13 Integrated controls
  monitored by BSRIA
